No Inserts This Sunday...Now What?

There will be no coupon inserts this coming Sunday because of the holiday.  I guess the advertisers feel that holiday picnics and celebrations of the last days of summer do not lend themselves to couponing.  But, there are other things we couponers can do to find savings during the coupon drought.

First, check with your newspaper subscription service to be sure you are getting the best price possible.  The last thing you want to do is to end up wasting your savings from couponing on the coupons themselves.  I was able to reduce my weekly subscription (Sunday's only) from $1.87 per week to $1.05 per week.  When I first began my Sunday only service, I had a special new subscriber rate of 59¢ per Sunday for one copy.  I supplemented that with 4 papers from 7-11 (2/$3).  So, I was able to get five Sunday newspapers for $6.59 per week.

Now, I get four newspapers for $4.20 and my sister-in-law and another friend also give me their coupon inserts each week.  In addition, I have the Sunday Insert Schedule and will send a list of the Sunday's that I do not want newspapers delivered to the carrier and the Post (just to be sure they get the notice).  I did not do that last year. By just following this plan, I can save a little more than $100 per year on my newspaper subscription.

Next, call your cable/internet/phone carrier(s).  Tell them that you are falling on hard times and that you may need to terminate their services if you cannot get the costs down to a manageable level.  Ask them to reevaluate your services to see if they have some specials or new offerings that you could get to lower your monthly costs.

I called DirecTV (the satellite provider for our motorhome) and told them that I could not justify $109 per month for a motorhome and wanted to know how I can lower my bill.  Long story short, by taking just a little time, I was able to lower our bill to $72 a month for one whole year.  I could have lowered it even more but my sweetheart just has to have his boxin' channel and MASN (baseball channel).  Bottom line, I will save $544!  And, if I have the service suspended for the months we do not travel, I will save an additional $72 per month each month it is suspended.

Finally, I made a call to Verizon.  They provide service for my internet/telephone/television.  I told them that I would like to have the cost of my service evaluated to see if I am getting the best savings.  My contract with Verizon had already expired and so that was enough incentive for them to help me save a little money.  They asked me what things I wanted continued with my service and what things I could drop.  Again, my sweetie pie loves his boxing and sports.  Neither of us really watches the movies on those movie channels but we do like our cooking shows, westerns, the Learning Channel, Discovery, OWN and a few more.  Bottom line: I am getting a free upgrade to a faster internet connection, did not loose any of my favorite stations and my bill will be $15 per month less AND I will receive a VISA gift card for $120.  My obligation is for two years during which time I have the latitude to change my programing options at anytime within the two years.  I will save $180 per year on my bill and an additional $120 with the gift card for a total of $300.

With just less than 45 minutes of my time, I saved $944 without clipping any coupons!    I still have a few other things to renegotiate this weekend.  Our motorhome insurance is up for renewal in September.  Time to see how much we can lower that bill.

So, don't go into withdrawal this weekend with no coupons to clip.  Instead, sit back, pick up your phone, grab a stack of bills, and make some calls.

Happy Calling!

Extra Care Buckin' at CVS

CVS is my favorite place to shop for personal care items, paper items, toiletries, beauty aids, over the counter meds, etc.  As I have said many times before, I have shopped there since before they were CVS.  Remember, People's Drug Store? It was the mainstay pharmacy of the entire eastern seaboard for nearly 90 years.  It officially changed its name in 1990 after years of changing ownership to keep it afloat.    Now, as CVS, it holds its own among the pharmacy giants in our area: Walgreens and RiteAid pharmacies.

$12 ECB's & $5.75 CVS Extra Care Coupons
I  love the Extra Care Bucks (ECB's) rewards at CVS.  I can rack up the savings to the point that I walk away with free or nearly free items every single shopping trip.  ECB's are store coupons with a twist.  You can use them exactly like dollars for nearly all of your CVS purchases.  Exclusions: prescriptions, alcohol, gift cards, lottery, tobacco products, money orders, postage stamps, and pre-paid cards.  ECB's can be stacked with each other, other CVS money off coupons, and manufacturers coupons.  If you are a very saavy couponer, you will be able to rack up even more ECB's at the end of the shopping trip, too.

The CVS/pharmacy coupon policy is very customer friendly.  However, the cashiers and manager may not be.  So, take a copy of the coupon policy with you.  As always, NEVER argue over coupons.  You may be right, but the manager has the final say...even if he/she is mistaken.  Contact CVS customer service on their website and send them and the store manager a copy of your communication and/or a copy of the CVS coupon policy. A courteous couponer trumps a nasty store manager or cashier every time.

I will not be able to skip shopping at CVS this week.  Some of my ECB's expire on the 11th.  I also have a coupon for a FREE "Unreal Bar"...what the heck is an "Unreal Bar"???  There are a few really great deals that will reward me with ECB's at the end of my deals.  You can check out and compare CVS deals from this week with next week each Thursday.  That's when the new weekly ad is posted on their website.  It is a tab that appears just next to the current week's tab.

I am excited that a brand new Walgreens is coming to Laurel.  In the meantime, I will be studying my Walgreen's coupon policy and rewards program.  I am not familiar with either.  In addition, I have recently started shopping at RiteAid more regularly.  It has a reward program (Up Rewards) and single check rebate program, as well.  I am not very good at rebates.  I always forget to send them in.  Supposedly, RitaAids rebate program can be done on their website after each of your shopping trips.  I will definitely be checking it out.

Regardless of where you shop for personal care items, paper items, toiletries, beauty aids, over the counter meds, etc., if you do not join their customer loyalty program, you won't save as much money.  Shop their sales and stack them with coupons and you will get the biggest bang for all your bucks!

Happy Couponing!

Just a Reminder...

There are nearly $200 worth of coupons in this weekend's Washington Post!  Of course, if you subscribe to more than one paper you may have a gold mine lying around in your driveway in the morning.  I get four newspapers each weekend and you can believe that I will burst out of the house in the morning to gather my coupon treasure before they disappear from my driveway.  It is not unusual for coupon bandits to scour the neighborhood behind the carriers and remove the papers before the homeowners even realize they have been delivered.

Be sure to get your papers early and check each one to be certain all three (3) of your inserts are inside.  If not, call your carrier.  Most carriers will redeliver your paper if you call before 10 AM.  Don't let all that money just sit in your driveway

Click the links below to see the coupons included in this weekend's paper.  As always, you may receive more or less coupons with varying denominations in your area.
Try Tide Boost.  Don't like it, get your money back!

You should have a customer loyalty card for every grocery store, pharmacy, gas station, and/or department store in your area AND anywhere you visit or vacation.  Register each card online on the retailer's website, Twitter page, and like them on Facebook.  Most of the unadvertised sales, advanced sale notifications, discounts, coupons, and samples are given to holders of loyalty cards, Twitter followers, and their Facebook friends before the general public, if at all.  Most grocers and pharmacies reserve ALL of their in store discounts and sales for their loyalty card holders. Even if you do not clip coupons, you can reap the rewards of a card carrying shopper at your local retailer.

Finally, if you do not have a "junk email and/or facebook" account, do it this weekend.  I get coupon related emails and updates at the rate of nearly 40 to 50 per day!  I doubt that you will get quite that many simply because I get that many to keep you informed.  Usually, I will simply glean my emails for some of the better notifications and pass them onto you.  However, I do not check my "junk email" account more than once or twice a day and sometimes not at all on the weekend.  As a result, you may not hear about a last minute deal from me because it may be over and done with by the time I see it.  The best way to keep ahead of the deals is for you to subscribe to some of those deal blogs yourself.

Printable Coupons Reloaded & Subscription Coupon Sites...

This week has really been an adventure!  Monday, I needed my license for identification and whipped it out to show the lady who requested it.  Well, to my surprise and embarrassment, I found out when she exclaimed, "This license has expired!" that I had been driving around with an expired driver's license.  Oh, it expired January 6, 2012!

In the last 7 months, I have driven to Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina, and all over Maryland.  I am not a speed demon by any means but I do drive with "purpose"

It has been a rough week being under "house arrest" while going through all the steps trying to get my license renewed.  I have not been able to go couponing and there are some awesome sales awaiting my retrieval.  My husband said that he would "gladly" go with me but he quickly looses focus after 10 or 15 minutes.  His impatience is a distraction and often causes me to overlook obvious match ups, rain check opportunities, and unadvertised sales.  So, I opted not to take him up on his offer.  Hopefully, I should be able to get my new license in the morning.

While sitting around under "house arrest", I have been downloading printables from manufacturers' websites and from other coupon printable sites like Coupons.com; Coupon Network; Red Plum; Smart Source; and "store" coupons to stack with the manufacturers' coupons from Target; Dollar General; and Family Dollar.  It is the beginning of the month and the coupon sites have been "reloaded" with some old favorites and lots of new brands to get you to try something new for a change.

Print your coupons before they run out.  You are allowed to print two coupons each.  Manufacturers will budget a certain amount of coupons and when that limit is met, they are gone until they reload the next month.

Over the last month, I have been testing two "subscription" coupon sites: The Grocery Game and  The Savings Club. Both of the sites are paid subscriptions. However, I was able to access them both for up to 6 weeks for FREE! During that time, I evaluated whether or not they would be worth the subscription fees.

The Grocery Game's subscription fee starts at $10 every 8 weeks ($1.25/week) and can go as high as $60 every 8 weeks ($7.50/week).  The Savings Club (Coupon.com) subscription fee is $3 per month (75¢/wk).  Coupon.com has a free site that is accessible to anyone who visits the website.  But you can also subscribe to their Savings Club printable coupons for a subscription of $3 per month or $30 year.

I was very skeptical that either site would be worth the extra money.  Here's my evaluation of each:
The Grocery Game
  • The Grocery Game -  I have a very complex brain dynamic that prevented me from being able to decipher the workings of The Grocery Game.  I think that if you have the time, you may very well be able to win at The Grocery Game.  Thousands apparently have subscribed to this game and are saving big bucks.  But not me.  If you currently use coupon databases, you may find it easy to use The Grocery Game.  People who have taken the time and energy to figure out the Game are saving boat loads of money.  I was not able to figure out how to make the best of the savings offered in The Grocery Game.  So, I canceled it!  My recommendation:  sign up for the 6 week free trial and see for yourself.  If you have a problem, contact them.  They have really great customer support and it was very easy to cancel when I decided to do so.
  • The Savings Club - This website is just an extension of Coupons.com that is only accessible via subscription.  However, The Savings Club has a trial subscription that will give you a full 30 days to try out The Savings Club to see if it is worth it.  For example, The Savings Club gave me access to more coupons and more high dollar coupons that those available on the free coupons.com website.
  • For my zip code "20705", I have 305 coupons worth $472.03 available to print without the subscription.  Once I access The Savings Club site via the log in link, I had access to 346 coupons worth $663.63.  Many of the coupons on the free coupons.com site have higher denominations.  As with the free site, you are not limited to coupons only in your zip code.
The Savings Club
I have decided, for now, to continue my subscription to The Savings Club.  The additional higher dollar coupon denominations are currently saving me more than the $3 per month or 10¢/day.  I would recommend that you try The Savings Club  and The Grocery Game for the free 30 day trial.

Great Weekend for Couponing!

Table Coupon Organizer
Hi, Everyone...Tons and Tons and Tons!!!!
In other words, lots of hot coupons this coming weekend. Three to five (depending on where you live) fabulous inserts mean you should buy extra papers.  I will update Saturday morning as soon as I check my morning newspaper deliveries.   I saw one blog that listed 5 circular inserts and their coupons that are expected this weekend.  Hope this happens in Metro DC/MD area.

Check those circulars in your Saturday circular delivery for home subscribers and get a jump on everyone else.  There are some awesome deals to be had.  And it looks like you can expect 3 to 5 coupon circulars this weekend!  Check your papers closely BEFORE you pay for them.

I subscribe to 4 copies of the Washington Post@$1 each.  I will get an additional 4 copies ($3 for 2 pk at 7-11).  These coupons will go towards future stockpiling sales.  I scan the Sunday coupon previews and just buy extra copies of the Sunday paper when I see lots of coupons for items I want.  If you live in the Metro DC/MD/VA area, you can subscribe to a year of the Washington Post for 59 cents per week (Sundays only) (must pay the year in advance).

Remember, make your shopping list reflect what you need in your pantry and do not allow your shopping trip to be driven by the coupons.
  • Scan your pantry/stockpile.
  • Make a shopping list by item and not by brand.
  • Scan the list of coupons in your coupon binder and on the
  • Sunday preview list.
  • Scan your grocery and pharmacy circulars for sales that
  • compliment your shopping list and available coupons.
  • For best results, use a coupon database to check the sales.
  • Coupon learning sites and databases:
  •       http://www.couponmom.com (must register first)
  •       http://coupontom.com
  •       http://www.afullcup.com
  •       http://www.mygrocerydeals.com (great for finding local deals and coupons)
  •       http://www.supercouponing.com (great website to learn how to coupon and get the biggest deals)
  • Try to only buy items on sale and then match them to coupons.

Final Tip:  Avoid using your coupons the same week they are published unless you can get the item for FREE or almost free.  Manufacturers want you to blow your coupon dollars as soon as possible.  Hold on to them for a couple of weeks and you may get even better deals when prices are slashed to get rid of excess inventory bought to lure you into using your coupons as soon as you get them.

Hang in there and don't get discouraged.  I am still learning and making some really dumb mistakes just like the ones I made on my first couponing trip 16 months ago.  I and my couponing are a work in progress.  I hope you can learn from my mistakes.

Go to www.sundaycouponpreview.com to see next week's coupons.  Visit the coupon preview site late Thursday afternoon or early Friday to see all of the inserts and coupons.  You can subscribe to this information and receive it in your email on either the Wednesday or Thursday before the circulars are published.

ShopRite Shoppers...

I just received a wonderful deal for those of you who live in the shadow of a ShopRite grocery store.  They are giving you $20 when you spend $75 between July 22 and July 28 in their Go for the Gold campaign.  The catch is that you must shop from their shopping list that includes the following brands: Coca Cola, Kellogg's, Arnold, and Proctor & Gamble.  You can get more information and the shopping list here ShopRite Shopping List.  There are hundreds of items and it should not be difficult to find items on sale that you like.

First, print the list; highlight the items that you like or normally buy; check your circular and circle the items in the circular (from the list) that are on sale; match up your coupons that you have on hand; and go shopping.  You can get a headstart by checking the coupon and insert previews here: Sunday Coupon Preview  You can expect three inserts this Sunday: Red Plum, Smart Source, and Pepsico.  The deal ends next Sunday, July 28th so you have another circular to check for more savings.  You are limited to just one promotional reward per family.

Remember, that the average chain grocery stores carry more than 50,000 items.  The average circular only "features" 100-150 items.  Each shopping trip should always begin with a walk thru to see what other items are on sale.  That's why you should take your binder with you.  If it is large, leave it in the car just in case you find unexpected coupon savings.

CVS Pharmacy Shoppin' This Week

I have been trying to get my shoppin' groove goin' at CVS Pharmacy this past year.  In fact, I do about 95% of my pharmacy deal shopping there.  CVS is the pharmacy where I get my prescriptions filled and have been going there for several years.  So, I know my way around the stores and their circulars.

Anyway, I was looking through this week's CVS circular preparing for a shopping run tomorrow. I love ExtraBucks deals where I can get $1, $2, $3 or even $10 back after buying qualifying rewards products.  But what really makes those deals even sweeter is to be able to start those deals with some ExtraBucks in my pocket.  Well, I have not a single one.  I used my last EB on a big lotion deal last week.  But, HOLD ON!...
Don't Forget to Scan Your ExtraCare Card at the Coupon Center

On the last page of the CVS circular I saw FREE MONEY!!!!  For 4 days only (Sunday thru Wednesday) you can get $4 in EB just for scanning your ExtraCare card at the coupon center.  Only one of these deals per household. Sorry for the late notice.  You only have today and tomorrow to get this great deal and pair it up with one of the ExtraBucks Rewards deals to score some unbelievable buys.  The EB you print will usually not expire for at least a week.  I have not seen them so I cannot tell you when the EB will expire.

Don't forget that you can stack the ExtraBucks, Manufacturer's Coupon, and match them to an item on sale and/or a product that qualifies for ExtraBucks Rewards.  You can use as many EB on a transaction as long as the amount of EB does not exceed the cost of the item(s).  If you get a negative balance, the clerks go into a panic and don't know what to do.  So, be prepared to use a "filler" or low cost item to use up the negative balance.

Here's the transaction "scenario" for the deal I did today at my local CVS.  The limit on this deal is 2 EB rewards per household with your card.  The scenario below is based on using 4/$1 Colgate Qs & 2/$2 Lubriderm  Qs.  If you have less or none, you can still get a great deal.  Remember, you must spend $20 (before coupons) to be able to use the $4 EB coupon you will receive after scanning your card at the coupon center.

Scenario for My Deal Transaction at CVS Today:
  • Bought 4 Colgate 6 oz. MaxFresh (reg. $3.99 ea) - on sale for $2.50 ea. = $10
  • Used 4/$1 Colgate Coupons from 7/15 Smart Source (SS) insert (I subscribe to 4 papers)
  • $10 (4 Colgate) - $4 (4/$1 Colgate Qs) = $6
  • Next use $4 ExtraBucks from the Coupon Center
  • $6 - $4 (EB) = $2 OOP! (out of pocket)
  • Bought additional items to bring total up to $20: 2 Lubriderm Lotions ($7.99 ea.) on Sale B1/G1 for 50% off (Buy 1 get one/Get 1 for 50% off)
  • Lubriderm: B1 for $7.99/G1 for $3.99 = $11.98
  • Use 2/$2 Lubriderm coupons ($2 off 1):  $11.98 - $4 = $7.98
  • Total: $2 + $7.98 = $9.98 OOP1!...But, wait!!! When I scanned my card at the Red Coupon Center kiosk, I got a surprise.  I got an additional EB reward of $5 for a EB deal I qualified for and did not know it.  The deal: spend $50 on "beauty" products and receive a $5 EB reward.  I buy lots of red lipstick :-)
  • My final out of pocket (OOP) for $31.94 regular priced items on sale for $21.98 was $4.98...AND, I got $6 ExtraBucks Reward...
  • In other words, my entire order was not only FREE but I made $1 on the entire transaction.
So, when I go shopping next week, I will be able to start with my $6 EB.  It pays to scan your ExtraCare card and use those EB rewards wisely.

I love a FREE deal with ExtraBucks added...SWEET!!!

Happy Couponing!
